Lionsgate’s ‘Now You See Me’ to Get Third Installment

Lionsgate is working on a third installment for the Summit Entertainment hit movie Now You See Me.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told analysts during an earnings call Friday that another sequel is in “early planning” at the studio. Feltheimer predicted that the box office gross for Now You See Me 2, to bow in June 2016, will exceed the $351.7 million worldwide take for the original movie about magicians who perform heists.

Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine will return for Now You See Me 2, which is directed by Jon M. Chu.

Feltheimer also noted another possible franchise in the works with an epic retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey, with The Hunger Games’ Francis Lawrence to direct, and Nina Jacobson to produce. “Our deal with Francis contemplates more than one movie,” Feltheimer added.

Lionsgate motion picture group co-chairman Rob Friedman said the studio’s franchise model of using international licensing partners and production tax credits should allow The Odyssey to deliver high-end special effects at a contained cost.

“We feel very comfortable that we will be able to bring a fantastic film to the screen with our consistent economic model,” he told analysts.

As much as Lionsgate is looking to diversify its movie portfolio, including with the recent launch of its Lionsgate Premiere platform, and grow its TV production business, talk of film franchises dominated the analyst call on Friday.

Friedman insisted The Hunger Games franchise has legs to run for years to come beyond the multiplex.

“With our traveling exhibits, we continue to build more and more ways for our fans to interact in this world for years to come… Suffice it to say, we see huge opportunities to extend this world,” he said, without going into details.

The Hunger Games is headed to New York City via a traveling exhibition set to make its world premiere on July 1, 2015 at Discovery Times Square.

Designed by theme park creator Thinkwell Group, the interactive tour of the Hunger Games world will invite visitors to step inside and explore the world of Panem as created by Lionsgate’s YA movie franchise.
