‘Sesame Street’ health exhibit to visit Sloan Museum in Flint

FLINT, MI — Visitors to Sloan Museum will soon have the chance to see their favorite “Sesame Street” characters while learning about the human body.

From Saturday, Feb. 16 through Sunday, May 26, Sloan Museum will host “Sesame Street Presents: The Body,” an interactive exhibit designed to teach children how their bodies work and how to keep them healthy. Tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for youth aged three to 11 years old, and free for aged two or under.

Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, teamed with a Burbank, Calif. company called Thinkwell Design & Production to create the Healthy Habits For Life initiative to battle childhood obesity. The concept of the “Body” exhibit is a result of that initiative.

The exhibit features the “Sesame Street” muppets such as Grover, Oscar the Grouch, and others teaching children about the body in four education zones: “How You Work,” “Your Insides,” “Your Outsides,” and “Staying Healthy.”

The web site www.sesamestreetpresents.org also allows children and their adult caregivers to download guides and additional educational material before visiting the exhibit.

“Each component of Sesame Street Presents: The Body is geared toward children’s natural excitement about learning,” said Dr. Rosemarie Tuglio, vice president of Education and Research at Sesame Workshop, in a statement. “We believe that children learn best through active participation and self-discovery. The interactive exhibit features a wide range of opportunities for children to observe, investigate, experiment and talk about what they are learning with their parent or caregiver.”

Joe Zenas, the principal of Thinkwell Design & Production, described the exhibit as “a hands-on, interactive learning experience that uses Sesame Street and its incredible cast of characters to deliver real science and education in wildly kinetic, imaginative and unforgettable ways.”

The exhibit is the second local “Sesame Street” activity in less than a year. Last March, a musical entitled “Sesame Street Live” stopped at Perani Arena & Event Center.
